New Adventures in Knitting

I’m attempting to be crafty again, so I relearned how to knit and crochet. My first real project after only doing squares of practice-stitches was a little pouch I saw on Knit & Crotchet Now!. It’s very simple to make: takes only single crochets and not much yarn.

I used 2 yarns of the same thickness (worsted 4). The pattern is found on the Knit & Crochet Now! TV site and very easy to follow. The unique thing about this project was crocheting into only half of the stitch to get a thin ribbing effect on the side that is outward. (Hard to see in the pictures.)

Basically, it’s alternating 3 rows of single crochets for each color into a rectangle about 9 inches long. The short ends are sewn together and then the bottom bunched and sewn shut. The bottom was the hardest part because I think the yarn was too thick, so it seems bulkier than it should be.

After the sewing, the pouch gets turns inside out and the top gets a ribbon woven through to make a tie. I chose a fun sparkly green ribbon that I bought brand new from Michael’s a few days ago. The day after this was completed, I found this on the floor:

Guess I won’t be using the sparkly green ribbon anymore…

My current project is this scarf to practice my knit ribbing (knit 2, purl 2):

The color is actually a darker magenta mixed with rows of multi-colored pinks and purples… and since I’m not too excited about the color, I may scrap this unless someone wants to buy it.

After the scarf, I’ll attempt some small purses. I’d like my crochet/knit projects to be sell-able. Etsy store details to come! If you or someone you know has an Etsy store, I’d love pointers.

Luciana’s Favorite iPhone Apps, Edition 2

I’ve upgraded to the iPhone4 and life is better up here. This phone is super fast, clear screen, longer battery life and has mega bonus features. My favorite feature is the multi-tasking because I’m an app-oholic and I have wanted to do more than 1 thing at a time since I got my first iPhone3. Since getting the newer model, I can now listen to my favorite internet radio while playing my favorite time-management game. It’s heavenly.

Luciana’s Favorite iPhone Apps, Edition 1

  1. Words With Friends ($2.99) - Scrabble, but better because you can play with random people or someone you know. I’m quite the wordsmith so if you want to challenge me I’m Lulubelle110.
  2. Find iPhone (free) – Login and this app will find any phone that you connect to it. My husband and I have each other in our app so that we can see where the other’s phone is (or our own). This is perfect for spying on someone or locating a lost cell phone or timing dinner perfectly to your spouse’s arrival home. What’s also nice is that you can disable the phone from the app in case it’s stolen.
  3. Netflix (free) – I’m obsessed with Netflix. I love the instant viewing. I love the DVDs sent to me. I love the lack of late fees. I love everything. I watch Netflix constantly, so I upgraded my account to the unlimited and it was worth it. Now with this app I can watch Netflix at work on my lunch break (and with the iPhone4 retina display it’s perfection).
  4. Live Poker by Zynga (free) - I think this is the best free poker app out there. There are tournaments, sit and go tables, stat recording and more. You need a facebook account to sign up, so I used a fake one to not flood my real one with any spam it might cause (so far none). I love that you can play with real people. The other free apps are only with AI player which isn’t any fun. I learned I’m excellent at poker and I want to play for money soon.
  5. Barnes & Noble (free) – Your basic mobile shopping app, but it lets you search by barcode. So if you’re out and want to scan a book to see if a local B&N has it in stock, you can. Plus, you can reserve books right from the app to pick up in-store.
  6. I’m always looking for great new apps… the cheaper the better!

G-Free Review: Molly’s Gluten-Free Bakery

Hidden in Pewaukee, WI is the home of the best g-free baked goods I’ve ever had, Molly’s Gluten-Free Bakery. They have an extensive menu from brownies to pita bread to sheet cakes. I’ve only tried a few things so far, but everything I’ve tried hasn’t disappointed.

The most recent purchases were rolls and  a cake for my dad’s 50th birthday. Vanilla cake / vanilla frosting (he’s a boring guy, what can I say?) – but it was AMAZING. You couldn’t tell it was g-free. Usually g-free baked goods leave a weird feeling in my mouth. Not Molly’s cake! And those rolls… wow. Plain, they were delicious. Warmed up, they were delicious x500. It’s not easy to bake soft and moist g-free foods, but Molly’s has mastered it.

Previously I’ve had their raspberry dream cakes, which are small cake sandwiches with raspberry cream filling. The cake part tasted like a Twinkie but felt a bit heavier. It was so delicious. I should learn some more adjectives, but really, there are no words for something this yummy.

Dad holding his beautiful cake. Says, "Buon Compleanno, Maurizio"

Dad holding his beautiful cake. Says, "Buon Compleanno, Maurizio". Please note his "Italian" expression.

I can’t wait to try everything on their menu! Has anyone else been to Molly’s? Was it as fabulous as my experience?

Molly’s G-Free Grade = A+

Sunday Scribbling: Yes

Sunday Scribbling this week asks an interesting question: What have you said yes to that changed your life?

Aside from the magical, “yes, I will marry you” I said 2 years ago, I think the 2nd best thing I agreed to recently was buying an iPhone and convincing my husband that Apple was, in fact, amazing and not evil.

Since we have gotten iPhones, we have both been taken over by the wonderful world of Apps.  I love useful apps.  I’m not a fan of just installing anything because it’s free or interesting if I won’t use it more than the one time.  I will gladly pay money if it’s something I’ll use for a good amount of time.  I love talking about apps, seeing what apps my friends have & like, I have compiled some of my favorites.

Luciana’s Favorite iPhone Apps, Edition 1

  1. Facebook (free)- because I’m addicted and love checking it from anywhere, anytime. fb
  2. Slacker Radio (free) – this is the best radio out there.  It’s highly customizable.  Not like Pandora, where you can choose exact artists to start with, but you “like” certain artists and songs as they appear and you can alter the frequency you hear these artists.  You can also choose the popularity of the songs Slacker chooses for you.  They have a lot of genres to pick from and give you plenty of regenerative “skips”. Comedy and movie scores are my current favorites.  Very awesome for when I’m at work!
  3. Flight Control ($.99) – Best. Game. Ever. I highly recommend trying this game out.  It’s simply guiding airplanes into the landing strip…  it gets progressively harder, has a few maps to choose from and it’s very addicting.
  4. Catan ($4.99) - if you love the board game, you will love this app.  It’s basically the game in it’s entirety, but on the phone.  You can play with 2-3 AI’s or 2-3 other people.  The only thing this game lacks is the ability to connect to other phones for multi-player – right now, you have to just pass the phone.  I’m sure that change will be patched in time.
  5. BigOven (free) - this is a large recipe database.  It is the best one I’ve found so far (that’s free).  You can even put in some leftover foods and it will try to find a way to make them into a meal.  If anyone knows of a better one, I’d like the info!
  6. Amazon (free) – I love buying things on Amazon.com and this app is just a smaller, faster version of the website.
  7. Sim City ($2.99) – I put this on the list because I know my husband loves it.  He stays up until 4am playing this sometimes… It’s almost exactly like the PC game: build a city and make your little people happy.

I’ve been looking for a good g-free app, but that hasn’t been found yet.  I’m always looking for another addicting game or handy app so let me know your favorites!  Now, the question will be “yes or no?” to whether the app is worth our money or not!
